[Discussion] Microsoft's Missing Path to Transforming Xbox's Gaming Potential

Microsoft's Quest for Xbox Dominance

Despite its prominence in the tech industry, Xbox, the gaming brand of Microsoft, has been noticeably falling short of its potential for over a decade. The brand has been unable to attain a leading position in the gaming console arena, often trailing in sales to PlayStation and Nintendo. Microsoft's challenges extend to the digitization of the Xbox store on its Windows platform, where they struggle to get a foothold against the likes of Steam and Epic Games. To address these persistent issues, Microsoft must recalibrate its strategies, adopting solutions that exploit its unique capabilities, rather than merely pouring more funds into the problem.

Building A Robust Gaming Division

Microsoft is one of the handful of conglomerates with the ability to establish a comprehensive gaming studio division. This development should not only boost its first-party and independent studios on its own platform but also propel the entire industry into unexplored heights. Rather than rest on the laurels of the aging engines acquired from purchased studios, Microsoft needs to construct a devoted Xbox game engine and a software development division to support its first-party games. Notably, several Microsoft studios like Bethesda grapple with finding a bug-free game engine. This problem was also visibly demonstrated with the new Halo studios resorted to the Unreal Engine to improve their game in future releases. Considering these instances, Microsoft and Xbox stand a real chance to innovate and exceed existing gaming standards.

Building A Safe Gaming Environment

In addition to establishing an efficient gaming engine, Microsoft must also prioritize secure gaming. Most gaming studios dread developing and maintaining a dedicated anti-cheat software. Yet, the frequency of ineffective anti-cheat tools and the ongoing concerns about the potential security vulnerabilities that come with small studio-created kernel-level anti-cheats continue to plague the gaming community. Microsoft, being in charge of the operating systems utilized by the majority of gamers, particularly in the PC gaming sphere, is best placed to address these issues.

Envisioning Future Possibilities

Microsoft will do the gaming community a disservice by merely continuing to expand its collection of game development companies and offering average gaming experiences that struggle to attract or retain followers. Instead, the tech giant must leverage its potential to create an Xbox powerhouse studio, armed with a refined engine. This arrangement should support a team expertly skilled in the engine’s operation, and offer a compelling anti-cheat software for game studios to exploit. With strong foundational support enabling game studios to focally design games, gamers can anticipate a future where developers stand out in delivering what they truly desire.  However, we have no signs that this path will even be taken and a future of struggling Xbox games seems to be set.
